Edmond School Teacher Retires After 20 Years in Shidler-Wheeler and Dedicates Time to ‘FaithWorks’

Retired Edmond School Teacher is Proving ‘FaithWorks’ After 20 Years in Shidler-Wheeler

For 20 years, FaithWorks of the Inner City has been serving the community of Shidler-Wheeler in south Oklahoma City. This ministry, started by a retired English teacher, Sally Goin, has provided hope and stability to struggling families by offering various programs and recreational activities for youths and families.

The ministry began with Goin’s desire to help a young boy named Miguel learn how to read. But as time passed, she felt divinely inspired to start FaithWorks of the Inner City to help even more young people and their families. Today, it offers a wide range of programs and assistance, including a work skills program that employs 31 community moms, teenagers and college students.

Over the years, Goin and her team at FaithWorks have faced various challenges, from raising enough money to keep programs in place to keeping the community intact while the city’s urban development is moving in. However, with the help of their partners and supporters, they have been able to overcome these challenges and continue to serve the community.

Despite the challenges, FaithWorks has accomplished a lot in the past 20 years. Their mission to offer hope and stability to struggling families has resulted in a noteworthy decrease in the community’s dropout rate of 46% in 2003 to 13% today. The highlight of their achievements, however, is the significant impact they have made on the lives of the youths and families they have touched.

To celebrate their 20th anniversary, FaithWorks hosted a fiesta celebration with colorful decor and an authentic Mexican dinner. It was a night of remembrance, acknowledgment, and gratitude for all who have contributed to the ministry’s success.
